Zilveren zakzonnewijzer met kompas, met een achthoekige zilveren plaat, gegraveerd met tijdschalen voor de breedtegraden 40°, 45°, 50° en 55°, op de onderzijde de namen en breedtegraden van de belangrijkste Europese steden, vervaardigd door Nicolas Bion* te Parijs, instrumentmaker van Koning Lodewijk XIV. A silver Butterfield-pattern compass sundial, signed on the upper surface of the horizontal plate N. BION A PARIS, with hour graduations for latitudes 40°, 45° and 50°, V-XII, I-VII, 4-12, 1-8 and IIII-XII, I-VIII respectively, with quarter-hour divisions, the latitude arc graduated 40°-60°, with scroll decoration and bird-shaped gnomon support, the compass box with blued-iron needle, the underside with the names and latitudes of 26 European cities and towns, in the original fitted, leather-covered case.(sold)

*Nicolas Bion (1656-1733) held the position of Ingenieur du Roi for mathematical instruments and was the Jure of the Founders' Corporation 1700-02. He had a Paris address at Quai de l'Horloge a l'enseigne du Soleil d'or.
