Zilveren zakzonnewijzer met kompas, met een achthoekige zilveren plaat, gegraveerd met de tijdschalen voor de breedtegraden van 43°-46°-49°-52°, op de onderzijde de namen en breedtegraden van de belangrijkste Franse en een aantal Europese steden, en gesigneerd; 'Butterfield a Paris'. Vervaardigd door Michael Butterfield (1635-1725) te Parijs. Datering ca. 1710. Afmeting 66 x 58 mm. (Verkocht)

 

A silver Butterfield compass sundial, with hour graduation for latitudes 43-46-49-52°, IV-XII, I-VIII, 4-12, 1-8 and V-XII, I-VII with quarter-hour divisions, the latitude arc graduated 43°-52°, with scroll decoration and adjustable bird-shaped gnomon support, the compass box with iron needle, the underside with the names and latitudes of 19 French and 9 European cities and towns, fully signed; 'BUTTERFIELD A PARIS'.

 

Michael Butterfield (1635-1724) was a British clockmaker who settled in Paris about the year 1663. He worked for the royal court of France and was appointed engineer to the King. He opened in the district Faubourg Saint-Germaine, in the rue Neuve-des-Fosses, a shop for precision instruments. His shop's sign read AUX ARMES D'ANGLETERRE (at the sign of England's coat of arms, 1st mention in 1677). Russia's Czar Peter the Great visited his shop in 1717 and ordered a great quantity of sun dials
