Woven tapestry commemorating the heroes of early transatlantic aviation. The centre shows the images of four American pilots. Charles Lindbergh made the first nonstop flight from New York to Paris in May 1927. Richard Byrd was an aviator and explorer who flew over the North Pole in 1926. Clarence Chamberlin piloted the first transatlantic passenger flight also in 1927. Ruth Elder was an aviation pioneer and actress who made the longest flight by a woman in October 1927. Charles Nungesser was a French ace pilot who on May 1927 tried to fly from Paris to N. Y. The plane was sighted over Ireland and then never seen again. Francois Coli was a pilot and navigator known as the one eyed partner of Nungesser. The top corners feature the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. Also two planes are shown, one being the Spirit of St Louis. Size: 52 3/4 by 19 inches
