Commemorative medal depicting Vernon's attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Full-length figure of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), wearing hat (left), left hand extended, right receiving the sword which 'DON BLASS', on left knee before Vernon, offers with his right hand, hat in extended left. Small ship (right), sailing to the right. Legend: 'THE . PRIDE . OF . SPAIN . HUMBLED . BY . AD : VERNON'. (A disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. On this occasion the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.)
