Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (Ordo Supremus Militaris Templi Hierosolymitani), commander. Large red enameled and gilt bronze patriarchal cross on suspension with Jerusalem shield held by a Knight of the Maltese Order, the face and reverse identical; height overall including ribbon ring 117 mm (4 ⅝ inches); on original black silk neck ribbon with ties. The original Order of Knights Templar was created early in the 12th Century to ensure the security of the many pilgrims who travelled from Europe to Jerusalem after the first crusade of 1096. The Order grew rich and powerful over the next two centuries until charged with heresy and violently disbanded in the early 14th Century by King Philip IV of France and Pope Clement V. The modern of the Order was founded in 1804 as an oecumenical Christian association dedicated to the preservation of holy sites in and around Jerusalem, charitable works and antiquarian research.
