Zilveren zakzonnewijzer met kompas, met een achthoekige zilveren plaat, gegraveerd met tijdschalen voor de breedtegraden 40°, 45°, en 50°, op de onderzijde de namen en breedtegraden van de belangrijkste Europese en Franse steden, vervaardigd door Jean Chapotot* te Parijs. Datering ca. 1720. In het oorspronkelijke segrijn foedraal. Afmeting 5,1 x 4,5 cm. (Verkocht)

 

A silver Butterfield-pattern compass sundial, signed on the upper surface of the horizontal plate CHAPOTOT A PARIS, with hour graduations for latitudes 40°, 45° and 50°, III-XI, I-VIII, and 5-11, 1-7, respectively, with quarter-hour divisions, the latitude arc graduated 40°-50°, with scroll decoration and bird-shaped gnomon support, the compass box with iron needle, the underside with the names and latitudes of 20 European cities and towns, in the original fitted, shagreen-covered case (sold)

 

* Louis Chapotot (17th century) was a French scientific instrument maker. French maker of optical and mathematical instruments. Worked in Paris, 1670–1700, at Quai de l'Horloge du Palais à la Sphère. He was an apprentice to Guillaume Ménard and appointed Master of the Corporation des Fondeurs. He produced many types of instruments, including sundials, surveying instruments, mathematical instruments, and simple microscopes. His son Jean continued the business until about 1721.
