 D’après l’ouvrage 'La médaille Française et l'histoire de la guerre de 1870-1871, de J.P. COLLIGNON, il est cité un passage dans le Mémorial du premier siège de Paris par Loredan Larchey, Paris 1872, p. 191 : “Un spéculateur fait frapper une médaille commémorative du siège de Paris, à laquelle il a donné le nom de JETON DE PRÉSENCE. Les réclames des journaux annoncent que l’idée et les médailles ont le plus grand succès. Chacun de ceux qui y ont droit veut ou voudra avoir, parmi ses bibelots les plus chers, “son jeton de présence” en bronze ou en argent, et qui doit naturellement porter le nom de son possesseur”. Il semblerait également que ce type de jeton était réservé à toute personne restée à Paris pendant le siège.

 

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

Born of the terrible winter 1870/1871 and the Prussian siege of the capital, the City is the latest workers' revolution. The capital had many workers appeared at the economic development of the Second Empire. During the Prussian siege, people demand the election of a City in October 1870. Insurrectionary attempts in late October and then in January 1871 while the opposition is growing between the capital and the conservative National Assembly elected in February and based in Bordeaux. On March 1, the Prussians marched into Paris. 18, the National Guard rebellion and insurrection is spreading in Paris, a city council called Paris Commune was elected while the Thiers government evacuated the capital. In April, the fighting starts between the regular troops of Versailles and 20 to 30,000 fighters of the Commune. In early May, the regular troops MacMahon won many victories then enter Paris on May 21 During a week of heavy fighting, the "bloody week", the forces of the Commune are repelled. Repression is ruthless and estimated at about 20,000 dead on the side of the Commune plus approximately 38,000 arrests.
